[community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth '26 has a friending meme. If you're not familiar with these, what folks do is: (1) use a provided template to post about themselves, their DW journal, and what kind of DW journals they'd like to interact with, and/or (2) look through the posts and find journals to subscribe to. Some people ask permission and/or issue an invitation in the friending meme thread before subscribing; some don't; there's no prescribed etiquette.

I posted here. I've opened a handful of journals to look at, and also learned an alternate fannish acronym to search on, in case I'd previously missed journals with that as an interest.

This meme's template ends in a "Currently" section that I thought I'd share with you here:
  • Reading: This is my year of re-reading Stout's "Nero Wolfe" mysteries (last year was re-reading Bujold's "World of the Five Gods"), but I just started Girl Waits With Gun (2015) by Amy Stewart, and I recently finished Ramona (1884) by Helen Hunt Jackson. I'm following the Thundarr the Barbarian comic.
  • Watching: Babylon 5 (first time through), Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Daredevil: Born Again, Call the Midwife, Bookish, All Creatures Great and Small, Secrets of the Dead...
  • Playing: I'm about a hundred hours into Skyward Sword, with nothing left to do but face the endgame (or continue beating my head against the boss rush and minigames, which I do not enjoy; I play for the story and sidequests, first of all, then for the exploration, then puzzles, and last of all for boss fights, never for minigames or rushes). Up next, I'm deciding between Tears of the Kingdom and The Minish Cap... unless enough time has passed to play Echoes of Wisdom again already?
  • Looking forward to: Many of the movies coming to the big screen later this year! Fingers crossed. (Be good, be good, be good.) The Odyssey, Supergirl, Spider-man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday, The Death of Robin Hood, Masters of the Universe, The Legend of Aang...

Grappling with the reality that my lack of success is entirely a function of where, when, and to whom I was born.

There is no alternate universe me who's living the dream, because there was no springboard for me to start from. There's no left turn to take. No amount of "doing things differently" would have changed my level of success without outside, external future knowledge.

It's not that I've done something wrong, it's that I had no opportunities to do anything right, and was sabotaged at every turn.

You'd think this might be comforting, but actually it's possibly the most frustrating reality I've ever had to deal with.

There was never any off-ramp.

Willow: (appalled) It's horrible! That's me as a vampire? (Angel closes the door) I'm so evil and... skanky. (aside to Buffy, worried) And I think I'm kinda gay.

Buffy: (reassuringly) Willow, just remember, a vampire's personality has nothing to do with the person it was.

Angel: (without thinking) Well, actually... (gets a look from Buffy) That's a good point.

My poem "Reap the Rules" is now online at Reckoning.

It is my first publication with the magazine; it appears as part of the special issue on war, conflict, and environmental justice. I was honored to have it chosen when I had submitted it for another call and it should not have become more relevant than when I wrote it last summer, after the first U.S. strikes on Iran. The Elamite cuneiform means a prayer to Pinikir, the oldest goddess I know in that region. The English title is a mondegreen from Johnny Flynn and Robert Macfarlane's "Coins for the Eyes" (2022). I wanted it so much to be an artifact of that moment's anger. The need for curse tablets appears inexhaustible.

Description: Are you into idols? More specifically fictional idols? Or are you in a fandom that involves music in some way? Then this is the community for you!

Fictional Idols is a generalised community for all idol and idol-adjacent media. This includes any anime, manga, video game etc. that revolves around musicians or has a lot of overlap with idol media in general. Just as long as it's fictional. For a more detailed explanation of what media counts as 'idol' or 'idol-adjacent', check out our rules post.

We also have a friending meme as well as some low-pressure community events if that piques your interest (mostly for recs so far but there may be more in the future).

Finished The Ritz of the Bayou by Nancy Lemann, a novelist's-eye nonfiction account of her time as a "girl reporter" covering the 1985 racketeering trial (and 1986 retrial) of the then-sitting Governor of Louisiana Edwin Edwards on assignment for Vanity Fair,* in airy snapshots with a vivid eye for personality and atmosphere, populated by characters referred to obliquely as "the jazz-crazed assistant prosecutor," "the courtroom existentialist" (distinguishable from "the courtroom philosopher" by his quirk of keeping a diary, since the 1950s, to rate every oyster he'd eaten), "the man from the train", "the Yankee reporter", etc. Truly just 100% vibes rather than any sort of political or legal commentary, but I found myself thinking, throughout, that there were still dots to connect between the attitude that, in the mid-1980s, Lemann credited specifically to "Louisiana politics"— that the public seemed to enjoy charismatic politicians behaving badly, as "the two great enemies of Louisianians are boredom and lack of style"; that, at one point, an "alleged bribe . . . was scoffed at {by the defense} as being an amount too low to constitute a decent bribe, an indication of the moral tenor"— and American Politics These Days; Lemann does in fact connect them in her afterword to this new 40th anniversary edition.

* She turned in her story and the Vanity Fair editor "basically said Huh? What?" and paid her a "kill fee" and then Lemann turned that story into this book.

Turned back to War and Peace, which I've been neglecting lately. Since joining the Freemasons, Pierre has made a half-hearted (or, rather, whole-hearted but half-assed?) attempt at improving the lot of his serfs— unfortunately, he let himself be talked into downgrading Plan A: free the serfs!!! into Plan B: improve the lives and workload of the serfs, which under self-serving estate managers turned into paving the road to hell with good intentions— and visited the Bolkonskys, while an increasingly cynical Andrew tries to adjust to widowered fatherhood and civilian life.

Catholic church question, early 1700s

I'm (still) writing a fantasy story set in early 18th century Venice, and there's several scenes of the main character and her family attending Mass or otherwise being inside their church. It's not a big cathedral, more like a well-attended neighborhood church.

My question is probably very stupid but where the heck do the men put their hats while attending Mass or whatever else they're in there for? Do they just like, put their hats beside themselves on their seats? Or just hold onto them on their laps or some other way? Or would your average 18th century Catholic church have a sort of coat room or somesuch? My google-fu is failing in finding a church layout from that time period or text explanation, though I did find a good article about priests wearing wigs...

First off, an offer for [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth -- prompt me for a drabble or a poem (probably a limerick) in a fandom or crossover of fandoms that I know, any time in the next three weeks, and ye shall receive!

For those of you who have oft perused my fandom's list, the new entry is: T. Kingfisher's Paladins series, #1-3. I have not dug into the whole universe yet and I have #4 on hold from the library, but I got distracted when it took a while to come in.

In honor of [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth, a meme that [personal profile] sanguinity gakked from [personal profile] regshoe, who had it from [personal profile] goodbyebird:

Reply to this post saying 'icon', and I will tell you my favourite icon of yours. Then post this to your own journal using your own favourite icon if you're one of those inhuman things that are actually capable of choosing between YOUR PRECIOUS BABIES! userpics.

*

Regarding my favorite icon, which is the one I use Everywhere, I have finally gotten around to putting the source page's relevant bit on Dreamwidth:

Where my userpic comes from

I don't remember why I saturated it slightly more than the original art. I guess I needed the red to pop.

Tim is just So Heterosexual. Absolutely. Why would anyone ever think otherwise? Seriously, DC Editorial, took ya long enough.

Also, I cannot read that page without wanting Dick/Babs/Tim, and I cannot think of that threesome without thinking of [personal profile] minoanmiss, so I guess now my default icon comes with heartache. That definitely doesn't mean I'm going to change it -- I know the grief will become more nost and less algia in time -- but right now, damn.

Something I thought was funny/interesting... the official DC page did a poll asking whether or not Joker is Batman's soulmate and referred to the pairing as being "toxic BFs".

This isn't the first time either, the official Batman page compared Batman and Joker to Netflix's Heated Rivalry. (As a side note, one of the show's leads Connor Storrie has a pretty significant Joker connection in Joker: Folie à Deux.)

Not that I expect this to officially reflect in the comics beyond the usual subtext but it is interesting to see DC embracing it on social media.

[community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth runs April 25 to May 15 this year. The event celebrates the anniversary of, and promotes activity on, Dreamwidth, this lovely platform that you're enjoying right now.

Dreamwidth is my social media. I love this text-focused, algorithm-free, async format; it feels really comfortable and accessible to me. (I feel like I understand it, which is just not at all true of other platforms.) I love getting to keep up and interact with all of you! I wish only that more folks might feel like Dreamwidth is a place where they would like to engage these days, in general and overall, but especially fannishly. ♥

You? You're still here, evidently! What joy does DW bring you these days?

- Current reading, in honour of Fluffy Seed Day (which is like Flying Ant Day but earlier):
"Carefully she plucked off some of the fluffy white seeds and tucked them into her wallet. When she picked the last ones, two of them sailed away, higher and higher, far above the parked cars and toward the strip of blue sky that was poking out between the buildings. The dandelion plants by her feet had probably come here the same way. What an adventurous way of sending your children out into the world. For a moment Caspia pictured her parents putting her up on the windowsill and strapping a parachute to her back. 'Good luck, Caspia!' Then a gentle nudge and she would soar high up into the sky, surrounded by hundreds of other children, whose parents had sent them out into the world in the same way, to find a place where they could grow flowers and roots."

- Egg-shaped comedy nuggets: Bob Mortimer finally pushing David Mitchell over the edge in Would I Lie to You. The Chris Rea egg incident will never stop being one of the funniest stories I've ever seen told:
Bob Mortimer's egg tales (12mins youtube).

- Lena Chamamyan singing Lamma Bada Yatathana (4mins youtube), her version of an Andalusian traditional song from a poem by Ibn al-Khatib. Bonus track in a different style للحياة و البقاء بسلام (2mins youtube) aka "To live in peace on earth / To stop all wars and suffering".

JLA Giffen-DeMatteis-Wozniak, JLE Giffen-Jones-Robertson. Warning for just SO MUCH NYC-based destruction. If you thought JLI #11 had a little imagery that hit different after 9/11, you hadn't seen anything yet.

Inspector Camus comes to the Justice League’s old embassy to find Michael Morice cleaning up. Morice may have been fired some time before the UN shut down the whole Justice League operation, but this was his embassy before that, and he won’t leave it in a state of bloody disorder! Shaking his head, Camus uses the monitor room to contact the League, but the League is in wild party mode in celebration of Max's return. So that’s about as productive as discussing anal-retentive tendencies with Morice. Or pacifism with Despero. )
