first bicycle ride of the season
Apr. 25th, 2026 11:24 pmWas 17.8 KM, 11.1 miles, contending with noisy roads (12/18, County K, etc) all the way there and back. I needed that. Well, not the noisy roads aspect, that I could've done without, but the ride, yes.
I also needed the farmers market run to the square, if for different reasons. Farm fresh eggs, smoked trout that's going to end up in sandwiches with dark seed bread, and a veggie curry empanada that'll be breakfast tomorrow. :) Also a brief catch-up with one of my favorite vendors, Cora the empanada baker. She is just a delightful person, one of those folks who is unfailingly and honestly kind to everyone she meets.
I did not need the Brewer game loss, blah, but oh well. Nothing I can do about that. Except swear a little, heh.

Critical Role: Campaign 4, Episode 11
Apr. 25th, 2026 10:50 pmI'm very behind on Critical Role and have been rewatching the first ten episodes for the past week or so. Now that I'm caught up to the point where I was before life became very chaotic, I'm going to try to get properly catch-up over the next few weeks.
As with previous posts about the current campaign of Critical Role, this will be a combination of quotes, random thoughts, and some speculation. And it's obviously full of spoilers (albeit vague ones in places).
( Spoilers under the cut. )

how one loves the ache of your cracked lips
Apr. 25th, 2026 07:35 pmI made these salt bread rolls today (pic), and they are very tasty, but I think I still like pretzel rolls better, even with the mess of having to boil them before baking. There isn't much I like better than a big old soft pretzel, so pretzel rolls are where it's at for me. The salt bread is good though - very buttery.
I also made rice this afternoon in preparation for making a crispy rice salad tomorrow. I am very intrigued by the idea of crispy rice salad, but I don't know if I will like it in actuality, even though I like all the components I plan to put in it. (I'd also be more confident if every recipe I look at didn't call for a different type of rice. I made basmati, for the record.) I guess I'll report back tomorrow and how it goes.
And it's been a full day of watching hockey, after a long night of watching hockey last night. It's been exciting, but so much more relaxing since my team isn't in it.
And finally, here is today's poem:
Why You Should Never Marry A Poet
by Heather Bell
Think about it - the way that credit cards, bougainvillea,
vacations, dictionaries, the road on the way to work will
all never be enough. The poet wishes
with her deepest bones
and writes that she wishes
she would have killed you
in the supermarket. She wonders why
she ever loved you in song.
She publishes book after book. Each line detailing
how your hair is ugly and monstrous in the morning. And how,
like moss, you cling to her
so piteously.
But you marry her anyway.
and she looks like a roar of snow
in white. You figure she will read a poem about you
that day in front of everyone: her throat
is, after all, a stamen
or matchstick.
But she is silent, says only the I DO's
and a few Bible verses.
The poet loves with a most violent
heart. What you have not known-
she has wanted to tell you the truth
all of these years,
but grew silent as an old lover does
at eighty. There is no way to say
how one loves the ache of your cracked lips,
the heavy belly of your tongue, the years she spent
feeling not loved,
but still loving. Think about it-
the poet is fearful of others knowing and finding your mouth.
She is frightened of you -
realizing you could have been
loved better or harder
or with real words.

Why Dreamwidth?
Apr. 25th, 2026 05:42 pmWhen everything happened on LJ back in the late 00s, I was loathe to give up a 'permanent' home, a place where I could easily find my own posts, a place where I had made so many friends. It was my second true migration; I wasn't on Yahoo Groups long enough to consider it a home, and the previous jump had been leaving mIRC as well as Usenet.
But here was this site that was supposed to be similar to LJ in feel and workings, but with the added bonus of dividing things into access and subscription.
jerico_cacaw gave me an invite, my now-wife acquired me the seed account.
It helped, I admit, that I'd gotten into a kerfluffle in DC fandom, was moving more fully into Transformers, and was happy on that aspect to be starting over.
Why Dreamwidth now, though?
Permanent. My posts stay in a logically ordered fashion that I can go back and search in a number of ways. Not image intensive, which is a blessing to my eyes some days. Privacy controls I can use easily.
Or, in other words, it's where I keep my stuff.

Apr. 25th, 2026 11:18 pmToday I listened to a Big Finish Sarah Jane Smith adventure (very early and not Sarah Jane Adventures related at all, not terrible but not very good yet)
and watched three episodes of Legends of Tomorrow.
I had forgotten how much I hate Crisis on Earth X.
I stopped it after the first few minutes and tried to persuade myself to skip it but I am not a skipping episodes person so I went back after food and had another go.
The compare contrast on all the wedding stuff with all the Nazi AU stuff must have seemed like a good idea at the time but I do not see how.
There are good fun moments in the wedding stuff, like Alex and Sara, or Mick sort of in general.
There is the usual overstuffed irrelevance feeling of a crossover.
And then there's the garbage tier idea.
So. Not liking that.
And I've only watched the first episode of the Legends bit of the crossover, so I know there is worse to go.
Ugh.
I like the episodes that aren't the garbage crossover.
But I have moved on a bit in which characters I can stay focused on so a lot of me is waiting for Constantine to show up. And I like the others, I like Mick a lot, but I'm just a bit overly focused at the moment.
... I have three more comics omnibus editions to read and I want to reread Justice League Dark just the good bits version and I want to rewatch Constantine 2014 and mostly I want the version in my head to have any canon at all, but obviously I'd have to actually type that one, and I know that version is basically a new trenchcoat, just not quite new enough to even pretend the serial numbers never belonged.
Ah well, might turn into writing eventually.
In other news I tried a new food today but it tasted like tomato cardboard so I don't think I'll bother again. Vegetable lasagne but to get a vegan version it also has no gluten. The vegetables it used were not ideal.
Exciting life I lead.
Is pretty okay.
