Intro/FAQ

My check in: I got a lot of feedback from my two brilliant beta readers and have therefore done a lot of editing and rewriting and clearing up sloppy moments. I think I might have gotten in about 300 extra words and may write more before I crash.

Icon is Duncan MacLeod lying about in flowers. Just because it's sweet. And he looks gorgeous which is not unusual. Methos certainly thinks so. My Methos anyway.

Hurrah for excellent feedback and making good on it!

May 18. Didn't sleep well, so lots of laying awake in bed brainstorming the auction fic, but when I finally did get up to write I did not do that, I messed around with another story instead. Not to any great result, but sometimes that's how it goes. Whatever, I like the story, I enjoyed messing around with it.

You make me sad I don't have any Ewen icons! But approximately no one is going to make those but myself...

So many Ewens, and even Ewen Camerons! Mine is a fictional Ewen Cameron of Ardroy, one of the protagonists of D.K. Broster's The Flight of the Heron, which is a vintage historical novel about the Jacobite Rising of 1745. A Highland laird and a Redcoat officer are fated to meet five times and do each other "a great service and a bitter grief." Enemies-to-mumble, swashbuckling, hurt/comfort, and a cynical man who has given up on all human attachment learning to love again. (That would be Keith, the Redcoat officer, who hates the Highlands, waterfalls, herons, and handsome lairds, but who is as canon bisexual as it is possible to be in a 1926 novel and cannot stop thinking about how pretty Ewen is. And honourable. And noble. And tall. And he has such very nice legs under his kilt... And by gad, he's thinking about Ewen again!! *grinds teeth*)

Ewen is (as previously mentioned) very pretty and very tall (everywhere he goes, people make eyes at him, it's hilarious), and your icon of Duncan lounging in flowers makes me think of how Ewen is also a very pretty and braw Highlander who would look very nice lounging in flowers. (When we first meet him, he lounges entirely nude in the heather.)

Alas, Heron is a very small fandom -- there's perhaps a dozen of us, and only 150 works on AO3 (up from the 50 when I joined!), which means that I'm more likely to get prompts and discussion and auction bids for other fandoms. But as much as you can say that I have a current fandom (I'm aggressively multifannish), The Flight of the Heron would probably be it.

There, I have made an icon! Keith and Ewen from the 1968 adaptation. Keith trying to talk Ewen into surrendering while not being able to take his eyes off his lips. As one does.

You made me icons! <3 <3 <3 What does the text say? I can't quite make it out.

Yes, that's the 1976 BBC adaptation, which kept all the plotty bits and yet somehow mislaid the beating heart of the story, which is the bond between Keith and Ewen. A very good Keith, all parties obviously understood that Ewen has legs to die for, and extra points for making sure we began with nakey Ewen, but the actor who played Ewen never sold it for me.

The 1968 Scottish TV adaptation is the other way around: mislaid all the non-Keith-and-Ewen parts of the plot, but understood that the story lives or dies by the bond between Keith and Ewen. The 1968 footage is in terrible shape, and there are times the plot gets so telegraphic that I would have been lost without having read the book, but it does get that Keith and Ewen are unhinged about each other, and nails the ending.

Google drive folder for the 1968 version

I spent the afternoon making icons, too! :-D This is a fanart by [tumblr.com profile] chiropteracupola (used with permission!) that they made for [archiveofourown.org profile] goldenhart's "The Flowers of Edinburgh." Highly recommended smutty AU for the scene at Lady Easterhall's in Edinburgh.

Yes, it's Ewen and Keith! Keith has lost his wig so you see his own, short-cropped hair.

The Sherlock fic sounds very good; what is it? Is it BBC or another version?

And yes, go write something! Thank you for my icons of pretty Ewen. Here he is being all sophisticated and educated and cultured (and pretty!) and all the things Keith never expected to find in the Highlands.
